7:20AM - Grandpa Funk

The following I began working on transcribing a few months back.

This is a comedy skit done by a very young Robin Williams in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

In this skit, Robin Williams plays the part of a smart-assed old man named 'Grandpa Funk', in the year 2047, speaking to you, the viewer (in a 'letter from the future' standpoint).  Although some elements of the skit are dated, I still like it.   And it was a real bitch to transcribe, so I hope you can appreciate, although it isn't modern humour, it was remniscent of the times.

I give the pidgeons my methadone, so they come back.  Sometimes I withhold it, and watch em’ go through ‘Cold Squab’.  Ha-haaaa!

It’s very strange to have so many mutants in one place.  But I guess, I guess since World War III, things…things haven’t been the same…you, you probably don’t even remember it, though…all 45 seconds of it.  Remember when the President came on the air and said, “Thank you very much, you’re on your own, goodnight!”

I used to play an alien, used to do that, “neenee, neeenee!”  [obvious reference to Mork & Mindy]

It’s not that funny since they’ve landed, though.  They weren’t the little suckers we thought they’de be.  They turned out to be 8 feet tall, black, and they were pissed!

I remember lots of old stuff.  I remember the great quake of ’85…when all the people in California surfed to Denver…

Yeah, you kids, you shouldn’t have come through the force field.   You have to be careful, cause at night they send out the clones.  If you meet one, though, all you have to do is turn them sideways, that overloads their vision monitors, and then I bring em’ in here and make jukeboxes out of em’.

Cause I remember the old--, I remember the days of Woodstock, remember that? That goes back 80 years now!  I saw some of the best brains of my time turn to mud, then.  But there was some SPIRIT, some CRAZINESS!  Some madness there.  But, one thing from me to you.  Keep the spirit of madness in you, just enough to where you don’t get too stupid.  Just a little touch of madness will keep you alive, because no one in the world knows how to tax that.

There was an old, crazy dude used to live a long time ago.  His name was Lord Buckley.  And he said a long time ago, he said, “People are a lot like flowers.  And it’s been a privelege to walk in the garden.  My love goes with you."

Then the show closed with thunderous applause.
